I've been the owner of a 1550 V-MAX with the Eros turtledeck and canopy mod for 6 months now. I picked her up in January after she had been sitting for 6 years. I have had her flying since April and have logged probably 10hrs in her.

I am kind of curious as to how many V-MAXs are currently out there flying and I wanted to compare notes with some of the other V-MAX owners. The specs on mine are as follows:

Built in 1998 by Ed Scott of Wichita Ks
Enclosed cockpit w/ Eros canopy
Dual 5gal wing tanks
Empty Weight 434lbs
1600cc Great Planes engine
single ignition, Slick Magneto
Weber 32/36 DFAV carburetor
Culver 56x30 prop, max in flight RPM 3600

Takeoff Weight:664lbs
Takeoff Distance: 100ft on pavement
Climb Rate: 850-1000fpm depending on density altitude
Cruise speed: 60mph at 2750rpm
Max Speed: 81mph at 3400rpm
Stall Speed: 34mph
Fuel burn: 3.5gph at 3000rpm at 65mph

For an enclosed airframe its very dirty and needs some streamlining mods, as of now it has the steel gear with open legs, no strut fairings, no wing to fuselage gap seals and no wheel pants. In the near future I plan to cover the gear and seal the wing to fuselage gap at the leading edge.

Chris,
Good question. I am in the middle of building my 1550V MiniMax. It would be great to see what everyone else is doing. I was very active on this board back about twenty years ago. I learned a great deal here when I was building my 1600R. It would be nice to see more info on the V Max.
I am planing on using a single port 1600. I am going to use an underslung intake manifold. Not sure which carb or ignition I am going to use.

I'm also building a VMax.  I have a 1676cc Great Planes VW for it so far and most of a full kit.  First build and going very slow as I work a ton, but it will be finished eventually.

Seems like a slow cruise speed.  I was expecting about 10 MPH higher.  Are your numbers typical?

Brian has a great thread here on his V-Max build. Looks like his cruise is around 80 MPH.
