I am interested in a new in box older 503 with single Bing carb and single ignition for sale locally.  It is 1986 vintage.  Is there an easy way to determine if this is CDI or points?

Single ignition is a points type. Dual ignition is CDI.

And it requires an inordinately expensive conversion That said, it is a new and powerful engine so if the price is right, bite his hand off. There are a number of points assist systems that extend their life and improve their reliability.

Is it an aircraft motor, not snowmobile? If it comes with a gearbox, you should be all right.

Points engines are actually more reliable than CDI.  When points start to wear the engine doesn't start and run as well....but it doesn't suddenly quit, either.  CDI units work great....until they don't.

An engine that old should be disassembled and checked for rust and have new seals installed.

Thanks for all the feedback.  Yep, it is a aircraft engine with gearbox.

If it is new in box, it will be plugged and inhibited. I wouldn't do more than likely the heads to check the bores.
