I know next to nothing about CNC; although the concept has always intrigued me.  This did get my imagination going... affordable homebuilt airplane via affordable homebuilt CNC ??

I was thinking the same thing, got my Maslow kit just before they sold out.

Not done anything with it yet.
Once a get my MiniMax to the airport, have my airworthyness certificate and complete my check ride I'll start on the Maslow.

There's a thread on homebuiltairplanes.com where a guy is designing an airplane where the builder uses a CNC machine to cut out parts from sheets of plywood and then glue them together. I think it's a great idea!

I made my own CNC machine a few years back, I can offer advice if you want it!

I urge you however, go for a smoothstepper/mach3 control system, not the 3d printer controller based one I went with. I'm currently in the process of changing over now.

Are you kidding me? I'm still trying to figure out my hand-me-down I-Phone 4. It does look like a neat project through and you did a super nice job on yours.

Thank you! They are actually very simple machines to make once you get past the barrier of not knowing what parts you need to buy and what software runs them.

That cnc thread on homebuiltairplanes is similar to what I've been thinking of doing.

Most of the parts could be made to interlock making assembly quick and easy.

While I like the idea of having a machine cut out all the pieces so I can just plug and glue... aircraft put a large premium on weight which may be a conflicting requirement with cutting parts out of plywood (which is not known for being light weight).

This video always impressed me:
https://vimeo.com/33670917

It shows CNC doing coped cuts for the top tube on a tandem bicycle frame. Front, back, and middle pass through coped cuts.

I built one myself this summer out of a Sieg x1 that was broken. I use GRBL to drive it and prototype using G code because although I have Solidworks, I haven't had the time to learn how to use it. (This is entirely the fault of weather Gods who dictate that the weather is flyable.)
Mine only has a maximum size of about 6x10 inches so ribs would need to be done in sections.
