I don't see an  N-Number, without it the plane could be a lawn ornament.  Using a smaller engine could likely make it fit in the Ultralight category.

Except for the two five gal. wing tanks! Have they changed the rules or am I mistaken in thinking a UL is restricted to five gal. only?

I just sent a question to the owner asking if it was 'N' numbered.  I will update with an answer.

My understanding is that UL can only carry 5 gallons of fuel

The light at the end of the tunnel has been sold to China, who now charges for it, if you need the light at the end of the tunnel please send 100 Yen.

5 gallons only for ul, you can cary additional fuel cans with you though so you might be able to finnagle it through the regs somehow.

really though, you just need a smaller engine and fly without the cap on one tank

This aircraft is NOT 'N'-numbered.  Though the current owner was told by someone it could be.  I informed him of the situation though I doubt that will change the transaction.

The guy selling the Airbike apparently not only doesn't know what the rules are, he could care less.  I tried to point out there isn't a Rotax 266 engine, as he quoted: "This airbike doesnt fall in the ultralight class because of the power plant but with a rotax 266 it could."

His response was:  "pay attention it doesnt say rotax... have a nice day

You gotta' love the old 'head in the sand' thing going on here.  I tried to help and point out he could be in for some legal action by the buyer but he could care less.  Oh, well................

He's not as bad as this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors.....?hash=item414ce391bb This is at least the third time at auction. I asked him if he was sure it was a Hi-Max and he said" I know it is I bought from the factory myself" When asked wy the BRS was mounted underneath the plane "It exits through the top of the plane when fired" Some of the stuff out there is just plain SCARY!

That plane is scary, anyway.  Some thought on the BRS pointing down is that the bottom of the aircraft will, in all probability, become the top of the aircraft in a catastrphic accident.  Or at least it will be away from the folded up wings and tail, etc.  Mine shoots out the side and angled toward the back. (Airbike install).

Great point Marty.  If you've ever seen a video of a plane breaking up in flight, the wings fold over the top of the plane and then everything starts rolling.  The worst place to have a BRS aimed is straight up from the fuselage.  Down and to the rear seems to be the best to me, too.

Here is a example from BRS. Some of you may recognize this particular fuselage on page 24.  http://www.cafefoundation.org/v2/pdf_tech/Vehicle.Parachutes/BRS-6_General_Installation_Guide.pdf

Paul, I guess it could be a lawn ornament....but you could also close your eyes, click your heels, and say "it is an ultralight, it is an ultralight" and go flying.  Bet no one would ever notice otherwise.

For sure getting rid of the extra fuel and switching to a light engine would do the trick.  The powered parachute guys are developing some very light 25/30 hp engines.

I wonder what the reserve price is?

Some people don't care if it is legal or not. I know several folks who fly from a private strip and could care less about an N-number.

Private strips are great! That is untill the instant you go 'wheels up' and you are immediately in FEDERALLY CONTROLLED AIRSPACE.

I guess we have been pretty lucky.. as I knock on wood... most of us at our field have been down in a field and the FAA only knew about it once and that was explained as looking for a fishing spot.  I think the wheels up landing were removed at the break of day.  You look at an airbike and wonder how it could possibly weigh more then a couple hundred pounds. Of all the planes that look like ultralight and might not be... I think it is the most likely to pass as one with any motor.

Did anyone see what the final bid was on this airbike? Wonder if it sold. The reserve hadn't been met 8hr pryer to the end of auction.

23 bids ending at $4000.00, reserve not met.  I remember seeing this listing before from the same seller.   I also noticed the gaping trailing edge.

I'm still looking for a Rotax 266..
